El Rocío – Just a 10-minute stroll from the site. This famous, one-of-a-kind village has sandy, spaghetti western-style streets, horses everywhere, and plenty of bars and restaurants. It’s a dream location for equestrians and a place many Spaniards long to own a home.
You’ll also find smaller supermarkets, a pharmacy, medical centre, a post office, and the famous church overlooking the magical, disappearing lake, filled with over 300 migratory birds, including flamingos, in the winter months.
The village hosts festivals all year, including the huge Romería, which attracts around a million visitors. Expect stunning flamenco dresses, music, dancing, horses, carriages, food, drink — and an unforgettable atmosphere.

Matalascañas – the seaside resort of Matalascañas, part of the Almonte coastline and home to Spain’s longest beach. Stretching around 30 miles, it includes the wild, unspoilt shores of Doñana National Park all the way to the Guadalquivir River. The resort offers bars, shops, restaurants and a 2km promenade loved by locals. Expect miles of golden sand and a lively July–August with concerts, DJ sunset sessions, summer market and parties. Out of season, it’s peaceful — ideal for walks, lazy lunches, coffee and tapas by the sea.
Almonte – The local town (third largest in Huelva) and the municipality (12 minutes in the opposite direction from the site) is the Spanish working town of Almonte. Here you will find large supermarkets, a 24-hour medical centre, vets, dentists, bars, restaurants, Friday market, carnivals, fiestas, a theatre, 2 parks, and a beautiful plaza with another stunning church.
